She the People Disappoints: A Missed Opportunity in Comedy and Commentary

Stress management tip inspired by Anotinette: Know when to lean on your support system

Know that I took one for the team and watched this so you don’t have to. Listen to the podcast to get the real deal. I am giving you all the spoilers as well because you should not have to watch this to know what happens. Sorry, not sorry.

She the People, a Tyler Perry Production, stars Terri J Vaughn as Antoinette Dunkerson, Jade Novah as Shamika, Jo Marie Payton as Cleo Dunkerson, Regi Davis as Butler Donald, Karon Riley as Michael, and Terrence “TC” Carson as Danny, to name a few. It follows Antoinette Dunkerson as she becomes the Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi.

Antoinette is losing the race for Lieutenant Governor until she is caught on video, protecting her daughter. Well, she punched her underage daughter’s older boyfriend, who took her to an adult party. After the video went viral, she surprisingly won the election. As the first black female in the role, the “good ole boys” network was kicked in by Governor Harper, played by Robert Graighead. She is meant to be a figurehead and kept restricted, doing small-town appearances. The Governor selected her staff, stripping her the opportunity to build her team. He also withheld key information about her budgetary allowances and freedoms. They finally moved into the lieutenant governor’s mansion, that’s actually a plantation with confederate flag decorations all over the place. That’s when we met the butler who gave the only comical moment throughout the entire 8 episodes, giving “Get Out” and Steven from Django vibes.

Antoinette found herself at another event, this time getting backlash for the governor's failed promises. She also found out about a pipeline that is designed to go directly through all the poorest neighborhoods. She researched and learned that they can move it without any increased cost to the project. However, Governor Harper refused and had one particular paster on his side. Shamika and her boyfriend, throughout all this, were acting up and making matters more difficult for Antoinette as well. At the end, though, Shamika was her ride or die. Governor Harper pawned her off on three female senators who are also not fans of the pipeline and wanted to discuss it with him. He shoved Antoinette in front of them and left her to deal with their concerns. They gave her a good talking to, which spurred her into taking action. She recruited her friends to join the staff, and they worked on a plan to block the pipeline. During a press conference, she revealed that she is not on board and expressed her wish to find alternative solutions. She stood up to Governor Harper and felt really good about herself and the situation, but then the episode ended with what looked like a win for her and a heart attack for Governor Harper.

There were a few good things that bumped my score up a little. The acting was well done, the cast had great chemistry together, the wardrobe was on point, and the set was nice. Again, I was really rooting for this show because of the cast, but it was an epic failure. I am over the caricature of characters that Tyler Perry puts on. I honestly watched this so you did not have to.

She the People 4/10.
