One of Them Days starring Keke Plamer and SZA is produced by Issa Rae, the mastermind behind HBO’s hit Insecure. The film follows the two best friends and roommates as they navigate a wild and crazy day trying to gather their rent money so they do not get evicted. It is currently doing well with moviegoers staying with a strong 94% from Rotten Tomatoes and 7.2/10 from IMDb. The cast is popping with fan favorites from Katt Williams to Keyla Monterros Mejia to Lil Rel Howery. I was excited to see Joshua David Neal get his break because I have been watching his talents on TikTok for the past few years, and he’s got skills behind the camera more than in front of it.
One of Them Days is worth the high audience marks. I laughed out loud a few times in large part to Janelle James. Overall I thought it was a fun and enjoyable movie. I love Keke Palmer but don’t usually love her acting. I think she tends to be a touch over the top but in her role as Dreux, she gave just the right amount of energy needed. Her chemistry with SZA is on point. Although it was a comedy, I found there were subtle layers that made the antics of their day a little more interesting. The pacing was just right, the acting was solid and the vibe was chill. Oh, I did not find Katt Williams funny in this one, but I appreciated his presence.
One of Them Days 8/10 comedy score

Derux Jones played by Keke Palmer was better than me because the way I don’t think I would have been able to tolerate Alyssa after giving our rent money to her homeless boyfriend who squandered it all. I found her to be ridiculously patient and compassionate to Alyssa for way too long. I actually think that might really be Keke. She gives off a really forgiving and empathetic spirit.
Alyssa played by SZA annoyed me to no end. At one point she told Dreux that she was tired of propping her up and being her backbone/cheerleader when in reality, Dreux, to me, was the one carrying her. Dreux was the steady rock. Dreux was the one who supported her and really believed in her and herself because she was trying to make something of herself while Alyssa was sitting on her talents messing with boys who did not remotely value her, mainly because she did not value herself.
Keshawn, played by Joshua Neal, was really just a big plot point to me. Now, I loved Joshua Neal, and he did a great job in the role, but there’s not much to say about the character except that he is a user, a leach. Users exist in the world, and we have to be able to identify them and decide how we want to interact with them.
Maniac played by Patrick Cage was the don’t judge a book by its cover character who was also Dreux’s love interest and I was here for it. I like having pretty people to look at. He was in there sparingly but I for sure knew he would be the one to rescue Dreux from the fire.
Lucky, played by Katt Williams, was the voice of reason if you can believe it. I almost expected him to have some Santa Clause-type superpower, but he was pleasant.
The rest of the cast were like well-fitted cameo puzzle pieces. I have to say Issa did a great job of pulling it all together and my favorite part was when the payday loan people were the ones who came after King Lolo
