Are you an overthinker? I am. I am for sure. And I can get into overthinking when I feel like there is something out there that I did not do. Something that I wanted to do or felt like I needed to do but just kept on putting it off. So then I get to thinking about that. So I am not only thinking about being a failure because I did not even try but I am also stressing out because I did not try. Does that even make sense?
Let’s talk about The 5 Types of Overthinkers
When I researched the impacts of missed opportunity, I found things that mostly discussed FoMO. Which I don’t believe hits the mark in this case. FoMO is a component, but it still does not quite cover what I am thinking about.
What is FoMO. I am sure you have all heard of it by now, or maybe not. FoMO is the fear of missing out. Oxford dictionary defines it as “anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, other around by posts seen on social media.”
Personally, I feel that is a shortsighted definition because it can be applied to so many other things beyond social media posts, but I understand the definition is based on the root cause of social media. It was introduced in 2004 to specifically describe how people may feel when scrolling socials and see exciting things happening that they are not a part of. Whether it’s seeing your friends or seeing other people enjoy events, shows, etc, that you have missed out on.
Funny enough, I first learned about it when I was researching day and swing trading. It was introduced as one of the pitfalls of investing to be on the lookout for because one can experience a fear of missing out on a big win, which could cause them to make poor investing decisions.
The issue is that it can have health impacts by affecting our health with increased anxiety, stomach tensions and nausea, stress response symptoms and feelings of emotional distress.
Let’s talke about FoMO. Cleveland Clinic Article: FOMO Is Real: How the Fear of Missing Out Affects Your Health
So missed opportunities can increase and impact the feelings associated with FoMO. I also think it affects our morale as well. As discussed in the Cleveland Clinic article as to why it happens, the link to low self-esteem and then depression makes sense.
The cause and cure is you. –Xscape.
I cannot stress enough the impact of trying vs not trying at all. It is like the act of living. We have to shift our mindset and find success in the doing because sometimes the ultimate outcome may not be all that we thought and then we will look for the next journey.
However, if we do nothing, we will have nothing or be in the same spot
