People read self-help books because they want to be successful. Personally, I think acknowledging your need for help even through self-help books and coaches is a great step towards success building. We acknowledge that we want to get out of our own way and are trying to find the best way to do that.

Success requires commitment, motivation, focus,
a sense of purpose, and courage, -Jen Sincero

Jen Sincero herself is a wonderful success story and people flock to her because she shares her story and her passion. Again, it is not groundbreaking new information, but sometimes someone can say things in a way that really resonates with you. For example, Sincero says that “success requires commitment, motivation, focus, a sense of purpose, and courage.” Well duh! She writes things like this throughout her book; however, when you put it all together in her brand of delivery, the message hits home.

Success not only requires the aforementioned but it requires us to be mindful of the need to recommit ourselves to the task daily. We have to pay attention to the choices we have made to pursue a particular path. To me, commitment and motivation have to go hand in hand.

“Success isn’t static. It’s not a place. You don’t arrive at success … Success is a way of being and adapting and growing that gets easier the more you practice.” Well, duh! Practice. Practice. We talking about practice. Yes, we are talking about the practicality of practice. Sincero goes on to give examples of how we can practice, particularly with what she calls the “spiritual gym.” We will detail what this is in the next installment.

The takeaway from this installment is commitment, motivation, focus, purpose and courage.

Commitment: You have to be committed. You have to be committed to the plan, committed to your self and committed to starting over if need be.

Motivation: There will be times when you do not feel like it. You may be too tired. I know what that feels like but you have to maintain that commitment and in order to do that you have to stay motivated. That may mean hyping up your own self at times. Part of staying motivated is doing it even when you do not feel like it.

Focus: What is your goal? Be mindful of that and focus on that. Focusing on the goal will give you something to be motivated for and committed to.

Purpose: Purpose ties back to what are you focusing on. Purpose is not only about arriving at the goal but giving meaning to the journey you are taking to get there.

Courage: We all have to have the courage to keep pushing on and to do what is right for us. Believe it or not, it is easier to sit around and do nothing even though those consequences are great, we do it all the time. It will take a great deal of courage to fight for yourself and realize that you deserve to give yourself more than mediocre effort. Have the courage to go beyond what you even think is possible.
