Beware of False Prophets

The bible says in 2nd Timothy 4: 3-5; for the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. We know that these words were spoken to Timothy by Paul in his second letter to him, but do we realize how important these words are to us today?

Let us examine the text a bit closer to see how it relates to us today. First, let us talk about sound doctrine. What is sound doctrine? The answer is: The word of God! Then Brother Jones; what is the problem? Why are believers having such a hard time enduring God's word and standing firm on sound doctrine? I believe that it begins with listening to and obeying God. As people, we are so accustomed to having things our way, or doing things the normal or traditional way, that we often ignore the positive plan God has for our life. Many of us do not want to endure and stand firm when it comes to following God's direction and often use the excuse that "it doesn't take all of that." Too often we do not stand firm because the way God operates is not the way we expected, and we become dissatisfied and frustrated. Let me say it this way; listening to God and following His direction is not always an easy task. And because we are selfish by nature, we would rather follow comfortable traditions of men and ministries, rather than be challenged by God's truth. In fact, some of us have become so focused on not being challenged by God's word; we seek out teachers and preachers who tell us what we want to hear, rather than what we need to do. I believe Paul says it best; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth. I am not trying to judge, or criticize, but much of what goes on in many churches today has little, if anything to do with God. In fact, there are sermons being preached that are more motivational than spiritual and have gone so far as to even leave the name of Jesus out of the message.

Let me leave you with this today; if there was ever a time to pay close attention to God's word, that time is now. Time is wrapping up and it does not take a rocket scientist to see that the bible is quickly fulfilling itself. Therefore, let us examine ourselves to make sure that we are seeking God with a sincere heart, we are in a place where we are receiving sound doctrine, and we are not seeking out those who are telling us what we want to hear, rather than what we need to do.

Today's Scripture Meditation Verse: (New King James Version)
John 8:32
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Let us pray: I thank You for giving me a mind and spirit that focuses on sound doctrine and truth found in your word … in Jesus Name, Amen
