Stan O'Neal, CEO of Merrill No Longer

Image
For those who do not know who this is- Stan O'Neal was the CEO of one of the biggest finance companies in the US, Merrill Lynch, for the last 4 years. I know he just basically got fired but the dude is bad ass. For all that he has accomplished. I am not sure where one goes after publicly getting fired, but there is always a book deal in his future. Anyway, Merrill reported billion dollar losses for the first time in 93 years. Hey, he is not the first executive to get canned in this hellish time for finance companies. I speculate he won't be the last. With lending companies loosing and the market looking pretty weak, there will be more hard times to come. Brain check! Seriously, I published this because he is a Black dude who was the head of a major (one of the big 5) finance company. He worked his way up to the top by being on top of his game. No doubt he made some poor choices that eventually ended with his getting fired; however, dude is not hurting. Even without a severance

News Roll Call

'Nip/Tuck' - surgical strike scores big in LA New York Daily News - From the start, "Nip/Tuck" has been all about the lure, and the dangers, of reinvention. How fitting, then, that the plastic-surgery drama returns Tuesday for its fifth season by dangerously reinventing itself. I used to watch this show when it first came out, but it fell out of my radar. My cousin loves it and I know it is pretty good. Oprah Sorry for Abuse Scandal E! Online - The daytime queen profusely apologized to the parents of students at her all-girls school in South Africa for a sex-abuse scandal that resulted in the dismissal of one of its dormitory matrons. Oh this is just wrong and embarrassing. Mediator to the rescue of writers talks, maybe Reuters - With a federal mediator joining the Writers Guild of America's film and TV contract negotiations for the first time in 19 years Tuesday, Hollywood is holding its collective breath that the move will ... The AIDS/HIV Pandemic

Image
Not to be Debbie Downer but every now and then I will get serious for about two seconds. There are somethings that cannot and should not be ignored. This is one of them. So take some time to read through this post. ----------------------------------------------- The AIDS/HIV Pandemic We are in a pandemic situation with HIV/AIDS! Does that seem scary? It should. A pandemic is a global, destructive disease outbreak that kills millions and millions of people. I am sure you are thinking that this is nothing new but it is because HIV/AIDS started out as a condition affecting only several sectors of our population. Then the disease spread to regions which bumped it up to an epidemic. Now it is global affecting anyone and everyone. Please believe that the HIV/AIDS does not care where you come from, who you are, what color you are, or what your social status is. The numbers are astounding especially when you do not think of them as statistics but representing real live human beings. In 2005 57

Lions for Lambs

I have no idea what this movie is about. All I know is that there are some heavy hitters starring in it. Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise, Michael Pena , and Derek Luke star in this movie about two students who go off to fight in Afghanistan and blah blah blah. I read the summary, watched the trailer and still not really sure what this is about. Better yet, I have not been convinced to go out and see this instead of waiting for it on DVD. The trailer is not all that riveting. The story might be great but they do not do a good enough job of portraying that in the trailers. It seems, they had the idea that if we throw these big stars together people will come. Well, not this people. The big names are the only reason I would bother to watch on DVD if I go by the trailer.

Common's Finding Forever

Common is a purist in the way he raps. He stays true to story telling, and keeping a strong flow going. Finding Forever is a great album. "Start the Show"- The beat is hot. The hook is hot. Common is scoolin' the fakers. "Fake n-words is shivering." "The People"- If you want a joint that reminds you of old school hip hop this is definitely a good one. It just takes you back to the days when people were rapping about more than the bling. You know I'm feelin' this one because of the r&b touch thrown in there. "Drivin' Me Wild"- I don't know who this Lily Allen chick is but I am feelin' her on the hook. The video for this is great. The lyrics are so on point for where we are at today. Accomplished with the world at our finger tips but still searching for something to fulfill us. I Want You Check out the previous post. "Southside"- Rap heads will like this one, I think. It is not one of my favorites but I don&#

I Want You- Common

This video is fire. I am loving all of the dynamics. I could actually feel the ex-girlfriend's pain and the current girlfriend's spidery senses tingling. Now, you know we sometimes have a sixth sense about things. The last Common video that was hot like this was Testify. I don't know how many times I watched that video. Anyway, I posted them both. Enjoy! Common's "I Want You" "Testify" This is another hot one. Common looks yummy. Common's Yahoo Music Page

Who is Paula Newsome?

Image
When a series breaks out, the stars do to. Sometimes we see an actor and wonder who the heck is that and where did this person come from. It is almost as if they just busted on to the scene. Well, like in the music business, it is more than likely that this new face is not new at all. It is just that we fail to recognize him. Paula Newsome (37) is one of those "new faces." She plays coroner, Claire Wahburn, with an attitude on Women's Murder Club , the breath through crime drama airing on ABC, Friday nights. Claire is smart, sassy, and a loving mother and wife to a husband whom is paraplegic. Paula has been putting her dues in since the early 1990s in projects like Heros , Little Miss Sunshine, Criminal Minds, CSI , and too many more to list. Her hard work and perseverance finally paid off in a big way. Women's Murder Club is a Friday night hit! Visit Women's Murder Club for more information on the show and Paula Newsome.

This is a journey into time ... 1994 (I have a thing with that year) Three young women are putting out their second album after they created much buzz with "I ain't too Proud to Beg." Well, they took it there. Every single cut on that album was worth it. Powered by AOL Video

American Gangster with Denzel Washington

Who doesn't know this movie is coming out? Climb out from the rock that you are under and check out this trailer. I will be straight up. If Denzel were not in this, it would be just another gangster movie to me; however, there is just something about the way that man delivers his lines that makes me feel like he is acting just for me. Even still this is not one of those movies that I personally would rush to go see. The trailer looks pretty hot and there are quite a few big names in it. So, Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe star. T.I. has a role as well ... hey, maybe all the guns he was allegedly trying to buy was research for the film; okay, it was post research. Anyway, Cuba Gooding Jr. has a role (that was a shocker), RZA , and Idris Elba . This movie is full of some really great actors. I only hope that it all transfers to a box office blow out. After all, it is competing with Seinfeld's Bee Movie. American Gangster Trailer - The most amazing videos are a click awa

Gossip Girl: Episode 1.6 "The Handmaiden's Tale"

In cased you missed Gossip Girl. It was a pretty good episode. -------------------------------------- Tonight's Gossip Girl begins with Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) explaining that tonight is Blair's big masquerade ball. Rich people get tired of normal parties, you see, so they have to mix things up by putting masks on. Blair orders her handmaiden, little Jenny Humphrey, all over the city doing errands to prepare for the ball. Jenny goes to pick up dresses for Blair and her ladies-in-waiting from a dress shop. The proprietor of the shop lends Jenny a diamond bracelet to wear to the ball and charges it to Blair's account. Blair tells Serena that she is planning a scavenger hunt for Nate at the ball. She has instructed Nate to get clues from her ladies-in-waiting, all of which lead to Blair. If he finds her before midnight, then she will cash in her v-card. Serena tries to bow out of event, considering her past indiscretion with Nate, but Blair insists that she attend and be

Bed II

Although this could be a stand alone flash fiction, I highly recommend reading Bed I ( Bed Part I- Flash Fiction ) first. ------------------ Bed II Leon paced the small length of the sparsely decorated hotel room several times while nervously rubbing his hands together. He had never done this sort of thing. The idea of it all was too clandestine for his strictly structured lifestyle. Nevertheless, he was in an out of the way hotel, waiting. The knock at the door startled him out of his pacing. He stopped, looked at the door, and took a deep breath before moving to open it. Anxiousness fluttered its way through his stomach. Before opening up, he took in a deep breath and let it out. Leon pulled the door open but didn’t move. He couldn’t. He wasn’t really sure that he even wanted to go any further. Carl stood on the other side, discretely dressed in black slacks and a fitted black t-shirt with a black sued jacket over it. He raised an eyebrow as Leon stood, unmoving at the doorway. “Did

However, advances in technology have allowed it to take place in the virtual world at a much lesser cost. Introducing Britney Houston

I love to go on Youtube every now and then to see what kind of crazy videos are out there. Well, I ran across Britney Houston (obviously not her real name LOL). This chick is funny as all get out. Oh Heck No! Nelly's 'Wadsyaname'

I am so hating (hate hate hate) this new release by Nelly . The beginning sounds like All My Life from K-Ci and Jojo , so I am already set to like it right. Then Nelly starts rapping and I want to scream. WTH kind of mess did this boy put together. And what the heck is wadsyaname!? Now a whole sentence has turned into one word. I can't even bring myself to watch any part of the video. Hot Mess!

Divas Inc. by Donna Hill

I am on a roll. I just might finish my Donna Hill reading this month. So, this book has been out for a while. I probably should have went with one of her newer releases but I was intrigued. Divas Inc. was definitely worth the read. Margaret Drew has spent most of her life living in the shadows of her two fabulous "best friends" until one day they plan a vacation and leave her hanging. Instead of inviting her they ask her to house sit. Well, house sit she does. Margaret goes on an adventure that is a definite page turner. Throw in her eccentric grandmother, the comedy is nonstop. I loved this book. At first I thought Margaret was crazy for so many reasons but as the story went on I actually grew to like her. Donna Hill did a great job of infusing the story with a healthy dose of comedy.

Transformers and The Reaping on DVD

Transformers with Bernie Mac (a cameo really) and Tyrese Gibson is out on DVD. I actually loved this movie. I thought they did a great job in casting Shia LeBeouf . Tyrese and Bernie really had small roles although Tyrese did a pretty decent job. Also out of DVD is the Reaping with Hilary Swank and Idris Elba . I will have this put this movie in my queue because I have not had a chance to watch it just yet. *********

Keke Palmer's Record Lable Pressures Her to Get Raunchy!?

Keke Palmer better known for her role in Akeelah and the Bee has an album out titled So Uncool . Listen to her this Sunday, October 21st, on The Communicators, http://www.whcr.org/ , when she will discuss the lack of support she is getting from her record label and how they are pressuring her to get dirty. The last time I checked, the girl was only 14 years old. What is it they are wanting her to do? Anyway, I am planning to get her album for my niece. You can listen to some of her music on line at her website, http://www.kekepalmer.com/ . Check out her video for Keep It Movin , a track off her album, So Uncool. I'm saying, if we do not try to support our kids when they trying to do right, no one will.

Nobel Winner Said Blacks Are Less Intelligent

Nobel Winner Issues Apology for Comments About Blacks New York Times - James D. Watson, who shared the 1962 Nobel prize for deciphering the double-helix of DNA, apologized “unreservedly” yesterday for comments reported this week suggesting that black people, over all, are not as intelligent as whites. In an interview published Sunday in The Times of London, Dr. Watson is quoted as saying that while “there are many people of color who are very talented,” he is “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa.” “All our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours — whereas all the testing says not really,” the newspaper quoted him as saying. In a statement given to The Associated Press yesterday, Dr. Watson said, “I cannot understand how I could have said what I am quoted as having said. There is no scientific basis for such a belief.” I can tell you why you said it ya bastard! That was no slip of the toung. It was said because that is what he believ

Leap Frog's Talking Letter Factory

For those of you who have kids, this is a great video. My son is four and he loves this video. He is actually learning his letter sounds with it. The way they teach the letter sounds is fun and entertaining. I suggest that a parent watches with your child, so that you can reinforce the learning while they are watching and also when your child is not watching it. I play it several times for my son and he enjoys watching it, especially if I am watching with him. Look, if you are looking for a good gift, Leap Frog's Talking Letter Factory is the way to go. That Talking Word Factory is pretty cool too. Other Leap products

Donna Hill's If I Were Your Woman

If I Were Your Woman by Donna Hill So, I am done with my first book for my October month author spotlight which at this point might spill into November. I only have three more of her books to go, and I am working on Divas Inc. right now. So far, I am enjoying it. I had to jump into the contemporary because the romance stuff was starting to read the same. You know how it is when you read one genre a little too much. I need to step away from the straight up romance for a couple of books LOL. Anyway, If I Were Your Woman is a continuation of her Pause for Men series. This is the story of Stephanie and her new man. She recently stepped out of a very mess, very unhealthy relationship with a married man, and is trying to leave that past behind her. Of course, her new man has a secret that could ruin the whole relationship. I enjoyed this story. Donna brought back a couple of characters from Love Becomes Her that I would not mind seeing again and again. I enjoyed how the story unfolded and

What Happened to the Great African American Author?

So, I am part of a reading and writing discussion group moderated by the owner or www.apooo.org , and sometimes these topics come up that I think are really good. So, I post them. Here is a link to this article What Happened to the Great African American Author? I obviously do not agree with everything this chick had to say. I may be wrong but that is my opinion. You should read the article before looking at my comments below. ----------------------------------------------- "Are we so used to salacious gossip that it has become literature? " -- Uh, yea! Duh. Not only Black folk but everyone everywhere. I'm not saying it is right but it is what it is. "There are few great examples of African American literary authors on bookstore shelves. " --I disagree. There is a variety. It may not be the type of variety some would like but a variety none the less. There are still good books by AA of the shelves. They may not be literary but they are not all street lit either

Salt-n-Pepa Together Again!

I missed it. I have no idea what I was doing but I did not get to catch the Salt n Pepa Show . Since it is on VH1, I know I will catch the repeat of it before the next episode comes along. Now, I did catch some previews of it during VH1 Honors, and I have to say that both women look outstanding. Pepa looks like she may have had some work done. So far, I have heard good things about the show. All the clips that I have been able to watch have been interesting enough to put this show on my watch list. Basically, Salt is saved (a christian) and Pepa is still crazy, sexy Pepa . They are tryting to work something out by finding a happy medium in which both Salt (living Jesus) and Pepa (sexual diva) can be comfortable without compromising who they are. It airs on Tuesday nights at 10. In the clip, they talk about performing for Shaq's birthday party. Well, we all know that's not happening. That little tidbit alone made mad that I missed the show. Samantha Who?

Christina Applegate's 'Samantha Who?' not unforgettable New York Daily News - The premise of ABC's new Christina Applegate sitcom, "Samantha Who?," is medically suspect but comically sound: Sam, a woman who awakens from an eight-day coma, finds she has no memory of her previous life. So, I got to watch this last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I laughed out loud a few times at the smart humor. Christina's comedic timing is pretty good. There are so many aspects of this show that has great potential. Besides that Black Vulcan is on there. I can't remember his name but he played on one of the Star Trek spin offs. I like his type of dry humor; his delivery adds to the show. If you have a chance, check this show out because it is a trip. It airs on Monday nights on ABC 9:30 but check your local listing.

General Hospital Sweeps & Spoilers

General Hospital- Thank goodness sweeps are about to start because it has been a snooze fest lately. Now, they are throwing Leyla and Patrick in my face all the time which only makes me fast forward through. I'm not really feeling the so-called mob drama; Sonny and Kate bore me at this point; Carly is getting on my nerves; I am not feeling Lulu and Logan mess; Georgie needs to stop dancing around Spin and let him know what's up; I don't like Jason's hair; and someone else needs to die. The only highlight in the past few weeks has been Nicholas going off on people. He has been great to watch. Spoilers I have been reading that more people are going to get killed (Alfred maybe). The murders are not mob related but serial killer type stuff. Patrick is going to try to stop Robin on her pursuit of a sperm donor. Kate has a secret. The Liason (Jason and Elizabeth) baby secret it going to come out. And the ball that Nicholas is throwing is going to be where all the sweeps drama

Why Did I Get Married? Review

Image
Number one at the box office this weekend, pulling in over 21 million dollars, Why Did I Get Married? is a must see. Real talk, this is one of the best movies I have seen in a while. If you did not get a chance to watch, you have to go check this out. You will laugh (definitely laugh), cry (only if you have a heart), get ticked off, and feel inspired all through out this film. Tyler Perry does not disappoint by throwing in whopper size secrets in there but don't expect that this is like his plays. The only similarity is the ongoing message of having God in your life. The acting was great. The pacing was right on time. The writing was on point especially with the dialogue between the guys. Tyler Perry kept it real. It is easy to insert people you may know in your own lives into those of the characters. Tyler Perry as Terry- He did a great job of portraying a regular dude trying to get some time with his wife. Terry's characterization was that of the guy next door (if there is

J. Holiday In Concert

Image
I know you all heard that he will be going on R. Kelly's tour in the very near future. Well, I got a chance to hear him this weekend and a little appearance he did around my way. First off, I have a disclosure to make. As much as I am obsessed with everything in entertainment, I have never been star struck. I just don't do the gotta get a picture, screaming, going crazy thing. I don't have a collection of autographed anything. Personally, I don't even bother to get them because I will loose them. Now, I will take a picture, but that's really it. So with that, I did get to meet him this weekend, not that he would remember. What can I say about the appearance? Well, he came in and went straight to V.I.P. Then he took a few (when I say a few, I mean a whole bunch) with the women in the club. I subjected myself to this waiting in line part, so that I could have the picture for the site. Maybe it was taking the 100th picture or my shoving my business card in his face, he

Perfect Stranger DVD with Halle and Bruce

Image
In a Per fect Stranger , Halle Berry stars across Bruce Willis as the crafty reporter who plans to get to the bottom of her friend's murder. She puts together that Bruce's character, Harrison Hill, is the murderer and decides to use her seductive ways to infiltrate his agency in order to get the truth out. I will be honest, even though I rented this film, I was not expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised. Perfect Stranger is available on DVD for purchase or rental. I highly recommend that you go out and get this movie. Halle Berry plays her role as Rowena extremely well. She is mostly in bitch mode and is not really all that likable. She does a great job of maintaining her character's slightly unsteady attitude. I won't tell too much for fear of giving it away, but this is definitely a movie to see if you enjoy plot twist. Giovanni Ribisi also has a strong role in this film as well and I think he is one of the most underrated actors out there. He always gives him

In Bed with Her Boss by Brenda Jackson

In Bed with her Boss Brenda Jackson kicks off the Three weddings & A Reunion Kimani Romance series with a steamy tale about an administrative assistant, Opal, and her sexy boss, D'Marcus . He is ornery and overbearing but she can't help but find him attractive. He purposely keeps her at a distance to stop his attraction for her from growing. This was a plain old sweet little love story that turned hot and steamy. Throw family interference and Brenda Jackson has created a memorable love story. I can't wait to read about how the remaining three sisters find love. Other Brenda Jackson books

Kanye's Graduation

Graduation I cannot say that I love the whole album from beginning to end, but I definitely enjoy most of it. 1.Good Morning- This has a relaxed flow to it. I am feeling the chorus. “Hustlers that’s if you still living, get on down.” It is a good way to open up the album and set the mood. 2. Champion- The narcissism is at an extreme in this track but I believe I’m a champion too. I actually love some of the lyrics. Again, the hook is hot and the music definitely is a bob your head joints. The bridge satisfies my R&B heart. “Lauren Hill said her heart was in Zion. I wish her heart still was in rhyming.” 3. Stronger- I was not feeling this joint at first but it definitely grew on me. The constant beat reminds me of back in the day rap. “That that don’t kill me can only make me stronger.” 4. I Wonder- This had a great intro. However when Kanye comes in he sounds like he is yelling. “I’ve been waiting on this my whole life. These dreams be waking me up at night.” 5. Good Life- Featurin

Marion Jones, the Heroe?

The topic of Marion Jones is a hot button issue right now and being discussed everywhere. I had to post my response to one piece of the discussion. You can surely feel free to agree or disagree. Basically, some people are already to forgive MJ for this embarrassment. I'm not one of them. ---------------------- I remember those press conferences when she vehemently denied her use of performance enhancing drugs. I was all on her side. Not once but over and over and over again she denied any involvement what so ever. She had me convinced. Now years later she comes out and confesses to the opposite. Let's be real, she only gave those medals back because the Olympics were going to come after her for them. She only just now confessed because the blanket was about to hit the fan. There is nothing honorable about that. She is crying because she got busted and is embarrassed as well as she should be. She does not have her talent. Her "talent" IMO was falsified. Who knows how
